Simple Tricks to Type Faster

Keep your hands WARM. It is harder to let your fingers flow as freely if you have cold hands.

Trim your nails. Exposed finger tips help to feel the vibrations and help control timing.

Rhythm. Recognize that speed-typing does NOT employ perfectly-even rhythm. If you take any string of text, the character output per second is not constant. You can force yourself to make it constant, but this will cause you to lose speed.

Finger-Freedom Exercise. You might not be used to moving certain fingers independently of each other. To practice finger-freedom, relax you entire hand and place your fingers on a flat surface as if you are typing. Tap each finger as if you are typing - especially the middle, ring, and pinky. The goal is to be able to control each finger independently as possible, without any motion or twitching from any of the other fingers.

Muscle Memory. You will not learn how to type fast or correctly if you do not train by repeatedly practicing, repeating a movement over and over. Muscles have memory and you force them to remember through repetition. When a movement is repeated over and over again, a long-term muscle memory is created for that task. The most important thing is to press the keys with the correct fingers. It is important to press a key with the correct finger because your muscles will remember your actions. If you are chaotic, you will not succeed because you will be confusing your muscles. It is better to take some time, look at your keyboard when learning and assure that you use the right finger. If you type correctly, you will program your muscles so that they do not make mistakes. In time, looking at the keyboard becomes superfluous and you acquire habits that will allow you to type faster.

Touch typing is the ability to use muscle memory to find keys fast, without using the sense of sight, and with all the available fingers, just like piano players do.
